The birth of Yoga

The Birth of Yoga
The Birth of Yoga

The history of yoga is a sacred and vast knowledge among Indian people. So since I am not an Indian in origin I only do my research to find out the answers. I have read a lot of articles about this for the past months and I found out that our Indian brothers and sisters who are more knowledgeable about this area are not happy with the erroneous way it was explained.

So if you find this article quite lacking and you are an expert in this feel free to leave a comment and let's discuss it in a harmonious way. I love hearing history after all. शांति Shaanti (peace) my brothers and sisters.

Today yoga is so popular due to digital innovations. I meet a young kid while dropping my daughter at school and asked her if she happens to know what is yoga? She replied promptly, “Oh! My mommy  was doing yoga this morning, its an exercise of course.” Well, me and my daughter look into each other eyes silently and shake our head. Somehow the child was right but still, I believe that Yoga is more than an exercise so I come up with this article, the birth of yoga its brief history, 5 principal meaning, goals,  variations, and principles.

A brief history

What is yoga? According to google yoga is a group of physical, mental and spiritual practices
Or disciplines which originated in ancient India.
The Sanskrit noun YOGA translate to (and is cognate with English “YOKE” It is derived from the root Yuj “ To attach, join, harness, yoke”

There is a broad variety of yoga schools, practices, and goals in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. Among the most well- known types of yoga are Hatha Yoga and Raja Yoga. Let's deal with the technical terms later. Instead, let's focus on yoga in the 20th century.
Yoga gurus from India later introduced yoga to the West following the success of Swami Vivekananda- a Hindu monk who is famous for his literary works about, Raja Yoga, Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, and Jnana Yoga in the late 19th and 20th Century.

In 1980s Yoga became popular as a system of physical exercises across the western world. However, Yoga in Indian traditions is more than a physical exercise. It has a meditative and spiritual core.

Many studies have tried to determine the effectiveness of yoga as a complementary intervention for cancer, Schizophrenia, Asthma and heart disease. The results of these studies have been mixed and inconclusive. On December 1, 2016, Yoga was listed by UNESCO  as an INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE.

5 Principal Meaning
According to Jacobsen, “Yoga has five principal meaning”.

  1. Yoga, as a discipline method for attaining the goal.
  2. Yoga as techniques of controlling the body and mind.
  3. Yoga, as a name of one of the schools or systems of philosophy (darsana).
  4. Yoga in Connection with other words such as “hatha, mantra, and laya” referring to traditions specializing in particular techniques of yoga.
  5. Yoga as the goal of yoga practice.

Yoga Goals
The ultimate goal of yoga is moksha ( liberation) although the exact definition of what form this takes depends on the philosophical or theological system with which it is conjugated.

No matter how we defined yoga its variations and principles developed in various forms over time.

Yoga Variations and Principles

  • Yoga- Is a meditative means of discovering dysfunctional perception and cognition, as well as overcoming it for the release of suffering, inner peace, and salvation.
  • Yoga- As The raising of expansion of consciousness from oneself to being coextensive with everyone and everything.
